Marvelous Designer is now available for Linux
CLO Virtual Fashion has made Marvelous Designer, its 3D clothing design software for game development, animation and visual effects, available on Linux.
The new Linux edition, which is aimed at studios, includes the functionality of the existing Windows and macOS editions, plus a Python API.
Convert 2D patterns into animated 3D clothing
Widely used by games and animation studios, Marvelous Designer lets artists design 3D garments in the same way as real-world clothes, by stitching virtual 2D pattern parts.
Users can import an animated character model, drape clothing over it, then export the result back to a 3D application in Alembic, FBX or USD format, as an OBJ file sequence, or as a Maya cache, PC2 or MDD cache.
New Linux edition adds a Python API for automating or customizing workflows
The new Linux edition makes it possible to run the software on Linux systems, as well as Windows and macOS.
As well as the functionality from the other editions – you can see the latest features in our story on Marvelous Designer 2025.1, the current release – it includes a Python API.
The API makes it possible to write and run scripts directly inside the software: for example, to automate repetitive tasks, batch import or export files, or customize simulation properties.
However, it isn’t available as part of existing subscriptions: only as a new Enterprise-tier subscription plan providing floating licenses.
Pricing and availability
Marvelous Designer is available for Windows 10+, macOS 12.0+, and Rocky Linux 9+/RHEL 9+ Linux. The software is rental-only.
Personal subscriptions provide access to the Windows and macOS editions, and cost $39/month or $280/year.
Enterprise subscriptions provide access to the Windows and macOS editions, and cost $199/month or $1,900/year for a node-locked license, and $2,000/year for floating licenses.
Enterprise subscriptions for Linux cost $2,300/year for floating licenses.
