Creating Clothing for Characters in Marvelous Designer


The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating Clothing for Characters in Marvelous Designer, a guide to creating 3D clothing recorded by Concept Artist Olena Zykova.

The workshop, which is suitable for beginners as well as experienced artists, provides over two hours of video training in clothing design software Marvelous Designer.

Other software used includes Blender, Substance 3D Painter and Photoshop.

Create professional-quality 3D clothing for games, VFX and concept art
In the workshop, Zykova shares her complete workflow for creating clothing for 3D characters, suitable for use in concept art, VFX, animation or AAA game development.

The tutorial sets out how to create three layered costumes. from block-out to final detailing, and from texturing to the final render.

Zykova begins by introducing Marvelous Designer’s key tools, and her techniques for creating the 2D patterns from which the 3D clothing will be assembled.

Topics covered include blocking out and detailing clothing assets, working with double-layered garments, using internal lines and fabric presets, and layering clothing.

Zykova also explores how to texture the 3D clothing in Substance 3D Painter, and create renders In Blender suitable for presentation to a client, or for use in a portfolio.

As well as the tutorial videos, viewers can download project files including the final Marvelous Designer file and Substance 3D Painter files for each garment.

About the artist
Olena Zykova is a freelance concept artist and 3D character generalist with over a decade of experience in the industry.

She has worked with well-known companies including Gameloft and Time Based Arts, in fields ranging from AAA games and mobile games to TV commercials.
