Master clothing modelling with Marvelous Designer

The Gnomon Workshop has released Cloth Modeling Pipeline With Marvelous Designer, a complete guide to creating clothing with CLO Virtual Fashion’s popular design tool, recorded by The Mill’s Paul Liaw.

A complete guide to creating production-ready digital clothing with Marvelous Designer
In the video, which lasts just under 10 hours, Liaw provides a complete guide to using Marvelous Designer in production, combining it with Maya and ZBrush to push the results to the next level.

He begins by demonstrating the core functions of Marvelous Designer, before explaining how to create a ‘sloper’ – a generic fitting shirt and pants – which can be modified to create custom garments.

Liaw then goes on to explore how the clothing assets can be pushed through a pipeline, cherry-picking the strengths of each of the three packages to achieve the best-looking, most production-friendly results.

Topics covered include the best practices for making common garments, achieving animatable topology, and creating assets flexible enough to meet the needs of directors, FX TDs and texture painters.

About the artist
Paul Liaw is modelling lead and ZBrush pipeline specialist at The Mill. He was recently a senior creature modeler at Industrial Light & Magic, where he worked on Jurassic World and Doctor Strange.

He has worked in commercials, broadcast, film, VR, 3D printing, games, visualisation and education, and has won Pixologic’s ZBrush Live Sculpt-Off and worked on Cannes Lions and VES Award-winning projects.
