Leading creature designer Aaron Sims will be revealing the secrets of his work on Netflix’s hit horror series Stranger Things at a free event at Gnomon’s Hollywood campus tonight, Thursday 8 September 2016.

The talk, which will be broadcast worldwide on Gnomon’s Livestream channel, also features other key staff from Sims’ studio, Aaron Sims Creative.

Discover the origins of a classic movie-style monster
First broadcast earlier this year, the Duffer Brothers’ homage to 1980s horror movies quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched series – thanks, in large part, to some genuinely creepy creature effects.

As well as the initial concept designs for the creature, Aaron Sims Creative was responsible for around 100 final effects shots, discussed in more detail in this article on the making of Stranger Things.

In their Gnomon talk, ASC’s artists will be discussing their entire visual effects workflow, from concept art and creature design through modelling, texturing, lighting and rigging to final VFX editing.

As well as Sims himself, speakers include ASC creative director Steffen Reichstadt and executive producer Michael Pecchia, plus five of the key artists who worked on the visual effects.

Free to attend or watch online
Bringing Stranger Things to Life: An Evening with Aaron Sims Creative takes place at Gnomon’s Hollywood campus tonight, Thursday 8 September, from 7:30-9:30 pm.

It’s free to attend, but you’ll need to register online in advance.

If the event is fully booked by the time you try – or if you can’t make it to LA in person – don’t despair: it will also be broadcast worldwide and archived on Gnomon’s Livestream channel, where you can watch it for free.

Online viewers can tweet questions to the speakers using the hashtag #gnomon.
