Beeble launches AI roto service Background Remover

Beeble has rolled out Background Remover, a new AI roto service for visual effects and motion graphics work.

The system, available inside Beeble, the company’s web app, automatically identifies subjects of interest in image sequences or video footage, and generates alpha mattes for compositing.

Based on Beeble’s AI video-to-PBR model
Background Remover takes the AI masking functionality from Beeble’s existing VFX Pass Generator – based on its SwitchLight 3.0 AI model – and turns it into a standalone service.

It automatically identifies the objects of interest in uploaded image sequences or videos, like people, and removes the background around them, generating alpha mattes.

Users can optionally view and edit rough previews of the mattes before committing to a full extraction: for example, to choose which individual people to isolate in group shots.

Image sequences can be uploaded in JPEG or PNG format, and videos in MP4 and MOV format. Alpha mattes can be downloaded as 8-bit PNG sequences or MP4 videos.

Same strengths and limitations as the AI masking in Beeble’s VFX Pass Generator
Beeble describes Background Remover as providing “the exact same performance” as VFX Pass Generator, but with a workflow “redesigned for speed and efficiency”.

It also has the same limitations: uploads are restricted to 60 seconds of 30fps video or 2,000 frames, and both video and image sequences are limited to 2K resolution (2,048 x 1,080px).

Competing against other AI roto systems, both online and offline
Unlike pass generation, AI roto systems are also relatively widely available in other tools.

Last week, we covered ONYX Ai Matte, a new plugin for DaVinci Resolve and Nuke, both of which also have native matte-generation systems: Magic Mask in the case of DaVinci Resolve.

Other alternatives include Boris FX’s software, and Flow Studio, Autodesk’s online platform.

Price and system requirements
Beeble is browser-based. Processing is credit-based, with each credit equating to one image, or one second of video, for Background Removal.

Creator subscriptions cost $19/month or $192/year and get 540 credits per month; Professional subscriptions cost $75/month or $720/year, and get 2,400 credits per month.

You can use the app for free for non-commercial work, but Background Remover is not available in free accounts.
