Advanced Compositing: Keying & Creating 2.5D Projections

Gnomon Workshop has released Advanced Compositing: Keying & Creating 2.5D Projections, a complete guide to VFX compositing, recorded by award-winning artist Meliza Fermin.

The advanced-level workshop provides three and a half hours of video training in Nuke.

Master production techniques for compositing a VFX shot in Nuke
In the workshop, Fermin runs through the process of compositing a photorealistic visual effects shot from start to finish, following the principles applied in production.

She begins with a lesson in color space, explaining how to work in linear space without compromising an original log plate.

Fermin then sets up a 3D camera track in Nuke, and uses this information to build a 2.5D background, projecting a layered digital matte painting onto cards.

She also sets out the keying techniques that she uses in production, for compositing even difficult greenscreen and bluescreen shots.

With the tracked background and keyed plate complete, Fermine explores how to add 2D elements from online library ActionVFX to bring the environment to life.

As the final step, she reveals how to create a depth matte, match focus, and add grain.

As well as the training videos, viewers of the workshop can download project files including Fermin’s Nuke scripts and a PDF with links to download assets directly from ActionVFX.
