Master procedural environment creation in Houdini

The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating Procedural Environments in Houdini: a guide to creating 3D environments for VFX or game cinematics, recorded by environment artist Wojtek Piwowarczyk.

The tutorial reveals how to take advantage of the procedural nature of Houdini, SideFX’s VFX-industry-standard 3D software, and its VEX scripting language, to set up a completely non-destructive workflow.

Master professional workflows for creating photorealistic environments in Houdini
Over the course of eight hours of video training, Piwowarczyk reveals how to create a photorealistic mountainous landscape with rocks, vegetation and a ruined building.

The tutorial covers each step of a professional environment production pipeline, from the initial blockout and lighting phase to terrain generation and scattering vegetation.

Later chapters cover procedural modelling of buildings and creating complex shaders.

Piwowarczyk’s commentary provides additional insights into the way that professional artists tackle complex projects under the time constraints imposed by production schedules.
