Sneak peek: 3ds Max’s new ‘Send To’ workflow

Autodesk has released another preview video of new features in development for 3ds Max: in this case interoperability between its CAT character animation toolset and MotionBuilder.

Unlike previous videos, we couldn’t find an official blog post accompanying this one, so we’re light on detail, but the footage shows workflow from 3ds Max to MotionBuilder and back, maintaining a constant linkage so changes made to the scene in one app are reflected in the other.

One thing that presumably isn’t the point of the video, but which we found interesting, is that at 0:17, you can see that in the ‘Send To’ data-export options added in 3ds Max 2012, MotionBuilder, Mudbox and Softimage have been joined by Maya and Autodesk’s AIM urban planning software.

As ever, the new features are likely, but not guaranteed, in 3ds Max 2013.

Updated 5 March: Autodesk has now posted a new video (much longer, and narrated) showing this workflow, including data exchange with Maya as well as MotionBuilder. You can watch it in the player above.
