Tutorial: Creating a Large-Scale Aerial Shot

The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating a Large-Scale Aerial Shot, a guide to creating large-scale environments in Houdini, recorded by Industrial Light & Magic TD Frederick Vallee.

The workshop provides over seven hours of video training in Houdini, Arnold, and Nuke.

A beginner-friendly guide to creating a procedural 3D environment in Houdini
In the workshop, Vallee reveals how to use publicly available OpenStreetMap data to generate a procedural environment suitable for VFX or animation work: a city surrounded by fields.

This workshop requires basic knowledge of Houdini and includes some use of the VEX expression language, but is suitable for beginners, demonstrating most workflows step by step.

As well as generating the environment, Vallee discusses how to render a bird’s-eye view with the Arnold render, and take it to final quality with compositing in Nuke.
