Master grooming CG hair with Ornatrix for Maya

The Gnomon Workshop has released Introduction to Grooming With Ornatrix in Maya: an introduction to Ephere’s digital hair plugin for Maya, recorded by CG generalist Santhosh Koneru.

The workshop, which comprises over two and a half hours of video training, also covers V-Ray and Substance 3D Painter as well as Maya and Ornatrix for Maya themselves.

A complete introduction to creating hair for animatable characters in Ornatrix
Used by leading visual effects and game development studios around the world, Ornatrix provides a powerful alternative to Maya’s native XGen toolset for grooming digital hair.

In the workshop, Koneru provides a complete introduction to the software for both still renders and animations, demonstrating how to create facial hair for a 3D character that will eventually be animated.

Topics covered including using Substance 3D Painter to create hair Distribution, Length and Thickness maps for use in Ornatrix, and how to use Modifiers to match a hair groom to reference images.

The workshop also provides an overview of dynamics in Ornatrix, along with how to use the new V-Ray hair shader to render hair, and tips for optimising cinematic-quality scenes for rendering on a home workstation.
