Tutorial: master Vellum hair simulation in Houdini

The Gnomon Workshop has released Vellum Hair Simulation in Houdini, a guide to professional VFX workflows, recorded by Character FX Artist Saravmit Singh.

The intermediate-to-advanced workshop provides over four hours of video training in Houdini.

Master professional CFX workflows for hair simulation in Houdini
In the workshop, Singh sets out a production-level character FX workflow for simulating hair using Houdini’s Vellum framework.

As well as simply grooming and rendering hair, topics covered include building and localizing HDAs, designing a custom bend constraint with curve ramp controllers, and developing automated setups that automatically rerun simulations when assets are updated.

Singh also provides insights from his industry experience, including tips on collaboration, asset management, and troubleshooting common issues encountered on large-scale projects.

The premade groom used for demonstrations is not provided with the workshop, but viewers can download a chipmunk project file, available courtesy of Houdini developer SideFX.

The workshop also uses Deepak Rajan’s commercial Houdini add-on, dGroom.
