Dell backs the Blender Development Fund

Dell Technologies has begun backing the Blender Development Fund.

The tech giant’s Gold membership guarantees at least €30,000/year in funding for the open-source 3D software: roughly half the salary of a full-time Blender developer.

The first major professional PC assembler to back the Blender Development Fund
By corporate standards, Dell’s contribution to the Blender Development Fund falls in the middle of the membership tiers.

Its contribution of €30,000/year puts it on a par with Adobe and Meta, although it’s only a fraction of the contributions of the current major backers, like Bolt Graphics and Epic Games.

However, it’s noteworthy in that it makes Dell the first major PC manufacturer to back the fund, so it will be interesting to see if the likes of HP and Lenovo follow suit.

Funding will be used for general Blender development, not a specific feature
According to the Blender Foundation’s Facebook post, Dell’s membership was supported by long-term Blender backer NVIDIA, which has contributed to the fund since 2019.

Unlike with some recent corporate sponsorships, the announcement doesn’t mention a specific goal for which the money will be used: it’s simply to fund “general Blender development”.
