RE:Vision Effects releases video and animation upscaler REZUp 2

RE:Vision Effects has released a REZUp 2, the latest version of its video and animation upscaling plugin for video editing and compositing applications.

The update adds two new machine learning algorithms: one general-purpose model, and one specialized on processing faces in close-up shots.

An AI-augmented video upscaling tool aimed at post-production work
First released in 2022, is a specialist video and animation upscaling tool aimed at professional post-production work.

It includes two separate plugins: REZUp Resize, for upscaling or zooming into source footage, and REZUp Enhance, for improving image quality.

Both combine machine learning and non-AI-based video processing techniques.

Although there are a number of consumer AI video upscaling apps, RE:Vision Effects cites’ REZUp’s support for extended dynamic ranges, anamorphic video and fractional upscaling as key selling points for high-end work.

REZUp 2: new ML models, including one for facial close-ups
To that, REZUp 2 introduces two new machine learning models.

DNN 3 (Deep Neural Network method 3) is general-purpose model: RE:Vision Effects’ YouTube playlist shows a range of types of live-action video and rendered 3D animation.

DNN 2 is specialized on faces, for close-up shots: both live-action and “anime-style” video.

The new models are “particularly adept” at 4x upscaling – for example, upscaling HD video to 8K – but the playlist shows a range of other upscaling factors.

Both models were trained on “Creative Commons images and a bit of our own”.

They are GPU-accelerated on AMD, NVIDIA and Apple Silicon GPUs, and “should also work” with Intel’s new Arc Pro B60 cards, although you’ll need at least 8GB of VRAM.

Price and system requirements
REZUp 2 is compatible with a range of compositing and video editing applications, including After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, Flame and Nuke.

New perpetual licences cost $189.95, and work across all of the supported applications.
