Epic adds Substance support to Unreal Engine

Monday, February 18th, 2013 | Posted by Jim Thacker

Epic Games has added support for Allegorithmic’s Substances in the latest builds of Unreal Engine 3 and the free Unreal Development Kit. The parametric texture format is already supported in Unity.

Substances are supported natively in 3ds Max and Maya, and may be created or edited with Allegorithmics’s own Substance Designer. The developer claims that using the format can save “up to 80% of production time”.

To prove the point, Allegorithmic has whipped up a quick (and very Lovecraftian) tech demo. Titled ‘Beneath’, the video above follows one Mr. Ward delving into the dark places beneath Innsmouth.
