Learn 3D design from Blizzard’s Vitaly Bulgarov

It starts off as a small, gray sphere: just an idea in virtual 3D space. But within a few hours, that sphere has morphed into a terrifying biomechanical alien, wrapped in metallic armor and baring its mandibles.

Dreamed up by Vitaly Bulgarov, cinematic artist at Blizzard Animation, this creature is the star of the latest release from The Gnomon Workshop: 3D Design for Production. Covering ZBrush, Softimage, KeyShot and Photoshop, the detailed video tutorial reveals Bulgarov’s precision modelling and surfacing tricks.

“When I came across Vitaly’s work for the first time I was really impressed by his notion of design, shapes and form,” said Fausto De Martini, 3D Art Director at Blizzard Entertainment. “In addition to Vitaly’s mechanical design, which is one of the best that I have ever seen, his creative organic design has an extremely strong style, which makes his work very unique.”

Starting his career as a freelance artist in Moldova, Bulgarov moved to Moscow to work in major Russian game development studios while continuing to freelance for US and European studios. He currently works as a cinematic artist at Blizzard Entertainment on titles like World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, Starcraft II, and Diablo III.

3D Design for Production is available on DVD or digital download, price $69.
