In the workshop, Basauri provides a complete guide to modeling a fossa: a cat-like mammal native to Magagascar.

He works from the inside out, beginning with sketches and anatomical studies before moving to Maya, discussing how to use reference material to create your own studies and blueprints.

Having established the correct proportions for your model, he adjusts the skeletal geometry in ZBrush, sculpts the main muscle groups, and finally, sculpts the fossa’s skin.

Other topics covered include retopology, UVs and detailing the skin surface.

Aritz Basauri is Senior Creature Artist at visual effects company FableFX. He has been working as a creature artist for eight years, at studios including MPC, Scanline VFX and Alfred Imageworks.
