Download VFX artist David Llopis’s free Maya dragon rig

David Llopis, Lead Animator at leading international VFX studio DNEG, has released a neat free Maya character rig of a dragon.

A free bipedal dragon rig for portfolio work
Based on a model by 3D character artist Angel Diaz Romero, the rig is a wingless, bipedal dragon – it’s closer to a dinosaur than, say, Smaug.

Created using popular Maya rigging toolset AdvancedSkeletonfree for non-commercial use – it has controls for the limbs, body, neck and head, plus the bony spines at the sides of the head.

It isn’t licensed for commercial use, but it looks a useful resource for portfolio work.

Licence and system requirements
David Llopis’s dragon rig was created for Maya 2022, and has not been tested in other versions of the software. It’s a Maya MB scene file with 1,024 x 1,024px textures in BMP format.

The rig is free for personal and educational work. Llopis asks anyone using it to credit him when posting work on social media.
