Project Dogwaffle team ships Howler 8.2

The Project Dogwaffle team has just released a free update to Howler, its increasingly hard-to-categorise digital-paint-cum-VFX toolset. Key features in Howler 8.2 include terrain generation and GPU acceleration.

The video above shows a terrain being generated in Howler’s 3D Designer from procedural noise. The results won’t exactly give dedicated tools like Terragen or Vue a run for their money, but the terrains can be animated.

GPU support in Windows 7 and above
The 3D Designer also benefits from Howler 8.2’s GPU support “to speed up number crunching on more intense features” – in this case, lighting – as do the old Custom Blur tool and the entirely new Bokeh blur filter.

Howler 8.2 is available now for Windows XP and above. GPU support requires Windows 7 or 8 and any graphics card that supports DirectX 11. New licences of the software cost $99.
