Autodesk previews nHair simulation system for Maya

Autodesk has released a short preview video of its new nHair hair simulation system for Maya.

There is no accompanying information so far, but given the naming convention, we imagine that nHair will form part of Maya’s Nucleus unified simulation framework, along with the existing nCloth and nParticles.

As with last week’s 3ds Max teasers (the mCloth simulation system and a series of fixes for ‘Small Annoying Things’), the video is billed as a technology preview and not a trailer for a specific version of the software – although, given the timing, nHair is surely likely to form part of Maya 2013.

The preview, together with a second video showing the new Viewport 2.0 display, was released on Autodesk technical product manager Cory Mogk’s Mayalicious blog.

The latter seems to show some kind of Z-depth-based display system – but in the absence of any supporting information, your guess is as good as ours. We’ll update when Autodesk does.
