Go from zero to hero in Substance Painter 2020

The Gnomon Workshop has released Introduction to Substance Painter 2020, a complete introduction to the industry-standard texturing software, recorded by Naughty Dog lead technical artist Christophe Desse.

The workshop aims to take new users from “zero to hero” in under four hours of video training, setting out Desse’s workflow for texturing both hard surface models and characters.

A detailed introduction to hard surface and character texturing in Substance Painter
Desse begins the workshop with an introduction to Substance Painter’s interface and key tools. Viewers can download ‘Tike’, the robot model used for the introductory sections, alongside the videos.

With the basics established, Desse sets out his texturing workflow for a complete project: a 3D scene with a racing truck with drivers and a team of mechanics. Again, all of the models are provided for download.

Topics covered include material layering, texture sets, Smart Materials, projections, stencils, baking, anchor points, and how to approach hard-surface weathering and detailing.

Along the way, Desse also provides his tips for handling different materials and maps in Substance Painter.
