Digital painting tools developer Anastasiy Safari has released MagicTints, a new one-click colour-matching plugin for Photoshop – and soon, Affinity Photo.

The machine-learning-trained tool automatically applies the colour scheme from one concept image or illustration to another, preserving the original contrast and illumination, without the need for a LUT.

Apply the colour scheme from one concept image to another, or standardise sets of images
Although MagicTints also works as a more general grading tool for photographs, we imagine the main user base will be illustrators and concept artists: the demo uses concept art for Dumbo created by Craig Shoji.

The plugin automatically transfers the colour palette from a reference to a target image, or applies the same palette to all of the images in a layered document, which should be handy when working to a colour script.

It is also possible to specify primary foreground and background colours to apply to an image manually, making it possible to iterate quickly on colour schemes.

According to the product documentation, the colour conversion is based on a machine-learning core, and works with sub-pixel accuracy, even at image resolutions over 8K.

Updated 5 August 2019: MagicTints 1.1 is now shipping.

Workflow improvements include the option to batch-process images, to drag and drop images or folders directly onto the MagicTints panel rather than importing manually, and to set up custom keyboard shortcuts.

In addition, there is now a more detailed feature demo for the software, embedded at the top of the story.

Pricing and availability
MagicTints 1.1 is available now for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign CC 2014+ on Windows and macOS. The plugin has an MSRP of $39, but at the time of posting, it is available at a launch discount.

Versions for Affinity Photo, Lightroom and Sketch are “coming soon”, as are standalone editions for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.
