Download neat new free camera matching tool fSpy

Stuffmatic – aka developer Per Gantelius – has released fSpy, a new open-source still camera matching app.

The software makes it possible to match the position, orientation and settings of the virtual camera inside DCC applications to that of a photographic backplate, for use in VFX work or still composites.

fSpy enables users to match the camera position for a real-world photographic backplate by aligning viewport guides with straight edges in the image.

It works for plates with both multi-point perspective and one-point perspective, although for the latter, you’ll need to be able to provide the focal length of the camera on which the photo was taken.

Blender users can then use a dedicated importer to transfer the properties of the real-world camera to the virtual camera inside the software, fSpy being based on Gantelius’s older Blender add-on BLAM.

Users of other DCC tools will need to set up the virtual camera manually, by copying and pasting properties from fSpy into the target software.

Some packages, including 3ds Max and Cinema 4D, come with similar camera-matching functionality built in, but for those that don’t, fSpy looks a neat alternative to commercial add-ons.

fSpy is a free download for Windows, Linux and macOS. The source code is available under a GPL licence.
