Get Allan McKay’s free eight-hour plasma VFX tutorial

Veteran VFX supervisor Allan McKay has released a new eight-hour training course exploring how to create a glowing plasma effect in 3ds Max, FumeFX and Nuke.

As well as the tutorial videos, the course includes all of the project files needed to recreate the effect in other DCC software, and will be available for free until 24 June 2018.

Discover how to create a complete movie-style effects shot
The tutorial, which is divided up into seven individual videos, shows how to create a glowing plasma sphere, including particle and fluid simulation and 3ds Max, volumetric shading, and compositing the final shot.

Supporting assets include 2K versions of the background plates – originally shot on a RED Epic-W camera with an 8K Helium sensor – a LIDAR scan and HDRI of the location, and the 3D camera track.

As well as the 3ds Max project files, the 3D assets are provided in both Alembic and FBX format, so it should be possible to follow parts of the tutorial even if you aren’t a Max user.
