Marius Silaghi releases Subd Recovery

Friday, February 8th, 2013 | Posted by Jim Thacker

Marius Silaghi has released Subd Recovery, a new tool for recovering the lost subdivision levels of previously subdivided meshes, recovering “the exact topology and geometry … while maintaining existing UVs”.

The software should prove useful to anyone who has bought or downloaded a subdivided model online, then found that it can’t be unwrapped or rigged properly.

Although Silaghi is best known as a developer of 3ds Max plugins, Subd Recovery is a standalone app. It runs on Windows XP and above, and costs €30 (around $40). It works on models in OBJ format.

@Pope Zbrush doesn’t recover the original vertex positions and fails when the base mesh contained tris or ngons.
