Video Copilot releases Element 3D 1.5

Video Copilot has released Element 3D 1.5, the first major update to the company’s ingenious plugin for rendering 3D objects in real time inside After Effects.

The major addition this time out is the option to import animations – although so far, only as sequences of OBJs, so you’ll need a fair amount of GPU RAM (and possibly a plug-in to export them from your 3D package).

Other new features include a real-time glow effect with chromatic diffraction, per-material support for ambient occlusion and a new Draft Rendering mode for complex scenes. You can see a run-down in the video above.

Impressively, the update is free to registered users. Perhaps the fan who commented that Element 3D was “the greatest plugin known to mankind” on the software’s initial release wasn’t so wide of the mark.

Element 3D 1.5 is available now for After Effects CS3 and above on Windows and Mac OS X, price $149.95.
