If last week’s Super Bowl trailer for Transformers: Age of Extinction has whetted your appetite for shapeshifting robot eye candy, Decepticon Truck Crawl may be the sugar fix you’re looking for.
A detailed homage to the Transformers movies, the short was created by Digital Domain character animator Kiel Figgins and a team of fellow VFX professionals, including Imageworks FX TD Wayne Hollingsworth.
The 10-second clip was completed in “scattered nights and weekends” over a five-month period, and is intended as a motion test for a 40-second short involving the same character.
And if you want to see how this sort of thing is done, Figgins has posted a fairly detailed making-of article on his website, including rigging tests, an animation progression, and a compositing breakdown. Nice work.
