It’s not often that you get to see an Academy Award-nominated animated short while it’s still in contention for the Oscar, but Moonbot Studios has rather refreshingly bucked that trend, releasing The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore in full online.

Created in collaboration with author and illustrator William Joyce, the 15-minute short blends CG, 2D and and miniatures work to create a charming homage the joys of reading, infused with the spirit of silent movies and Technicolor musicals.

A set of short making-of videos is available on the movie’s website, which you can find via the link below. The project has also given rise to a highly successful iPad app.

Updated 28 February: The original Vimeo link is now unavailable (possibly because the short is now on sale on iTunes), but you can still see a lower-res YouTube version (above).
