Gnomon releases Creating Believable 3D Environments

Gnomon has released Creating Believable 3D Environments: The Making of ‘Unmystified’ – a complete guide to environment work recorded by Blizzard’s cinematic environment modeling supervisor, Seth Thompson.

A complete environment creation workflow
In the video, Thompson sets out a complete production workflow for modelling, sculpting, UVW mapping, texturing and lighting a 3D environment, using 3ds Max, ZBrush, V-Ray and Photoshop.

During the modelling work, Thompson exploring the role of key Max plug-ins Tension Modifier, Ivy Generator, nonQuadSelector and Ultimate Painter.

The tutorial also discusses techniques for controlling the viewer’s eye through strong composition, and shares some of Thompson’s insider tips for improving speed of workflow and quality of results.

About the artist
Seth Thompson has over 14 years’ experience in the game industry, having worked in environment design, modelling, surfacing, lighting and layout, for developers including Square Enix.

He is currently cinematic environment modeling supervisor at Blizzard Entertainment, and has created and supervised assets for cinematics including Warcraft III, World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, and Diablo III.
