Japan’s Actinia Software has released a new tool to export motion data recorded with Microsoft’s Kinect gaming peripheral as BVH files suitable for use in 3D software, Max Underground reports.
The site is entirely in Japanese, but from what we can glean via Google Translate, NIUserTrackerToBVH converts data recorded using a Kinect in the OpenNI format to BVH files, although there is only support for import into 3ds Max, MotionBuilder or Blender.
You can read a little more information here (English translation: scroll down to 25 December)
Download the software here (free, but suggested donation of ¥1,000: around $12)

Has anyone tried this? I’m pretty curious about how usable is this for mocap.

I’m curious, if it exports BVH files shouldn’t it load into any program that supports BVH files, like LightWave for example?

I’d have thought so, but there is a specific reference on the company’s homepage to 3ds Max, MotionBuilder and Blender. I don’t know whether those are just examples of apps that can import BVH files, or whether there’s some other reason you need to be using one of them — the information online is pretty minimal, and having to run it through Google Translate probably doesn’t help preserve the subtleties.

I think when microsoft release a higher resolution kinect and the developers create a software cappable to connect 2 or more at the same time we will be able to use that info for a highend motion capture, now is just for fun.. not for production I think.
