Blender.org recovering from the largest cyberattack in its history

The blender.org infrastructure is now recovering from the largest cyberattack in its history.

The ongoing DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack has overloaded the blender.org servers, making many of the official Blender websites unavailable since Saturday.

At the time of writing, the main Blender website is back online, restoring official downloads of the open-source 3D software, but the developer portal and wiki remain offline.

The ‘largest and longest’ DDoS in blender.org’s history
Visitors to the blender.org websites have been greeted with blank pages and 404 errors since the weekend, following what BlenderNation founder Bart Veldhuizen reports is “the largest and longest DDoS attack” that blender.org has experienced so far.

Services across the blender.org domain were affected, including the main Blender website, software downloads, the Developer Portal and devtalk sites, and the online documentation.

Main Blender website now back online, although some services remain unavailable
Early this morning, the Blender Foundation posted that after four days trying to fend off the attacks manually, it has moved the core of the website to a secure service.

At the time of writing, that has restored access to the main Blender website, although only via www.blender.org, not blender.org, and visitors may need to complete a captcha challenge.

Downloads of the software have also been restored.

To reduce the risk of malware creators capitalising on future attacks, the Foundation has posted a list of official mirrors from which Blender can be downloaded safely if the main site is down.

The other blender.org websites remain unavailable, but the Blender Foundation says that it is working to restore access to them today.

Most high-profile websites now exprience DDoS attacks at some point in their history, with recent high-profile attacks targeting GitHub and AWS.
