Watch a complete guide to lighting in Unreal Engine

The Gnomon Workshop has released Complete Lighting in Unreal Engine, a comprehensive introduction to lighting workflows in the game engine and visualisation environment.

The tutorial was recorded by Charleston Silverman, volumetric pipeline producer at 8i, a tech startup specialising in holograms for VR and AR.

Discover fundamental lighting techniques in Unreal Engine
Over the course of 108 minutes of video training, Silverman explains how Unreal Engine’s lighting system works, using the cabin of a pirate ship as a test environment.

The tutorial covers the fundamentals of lighting in UE4, including standard light types like point, spot and directional; dynamic lighting techniques; and post effects.

More specific topics covered include light functions, IES profiles, emissive materials, bounced light and volumetric lighting.

The training concludes by looking at how to optimise a scene, exploring techniques for improving quality and performance, and how to modify UE4’s config files to enable advanced features.

According to The Gnomon Workshop: “For those looking for a thorough understanding of the lighting system in Unreal Engine, this title offers valuable insight, tips and techniques.”
