Eye candy: Foam Studio’s beautiful C4D R20 demo short

Wednesday, August 1st, 2018 | Posted by Jim Thacker

Maxon has a tradition of commissioning beautiful short films to accompany the launches of new versions of Cinema 4D, its 3D modelling and animation software, and Cinema 4D R20 is no exception.

For the new update, announced earlier today, the firm got Berlin-based ‘digital trend lab’ Foam Studio – it’s part of Zeitguised – to create Influencers, a short film putting the new features in R20 to use.

Warping the everyday into something strange and colourful
Influencers starts off quietly enough, with the camera panning across what seems to be an empty kitchen, bathed in early morning light.

But it isn’t long before everyday objects begin to twist into something far stranger and more colourful, as bottles warp and distort and jugs burst open to reveal colonies of pulsing, semi-organic blobs.

After that, things only get weirder.

Created using Cinema 4D R20’s new fields and volume modelling features
The title is significant: Influencers makes use of the new MoGraph Fields system in Cinema 4D R20.

The new system provides a more powerful, versatile alternative to standard falloffs for controlling procedural animations, with users able to layer control fields with standard blending modes, or remap their effects.

Influencers also takes advantage of another major new feature in R20, volume modelling, which makes it possible to perform Boolean-type operations on volumetric objects in OpenVDB format.

You can find out more about how the short was created in this brief overview video, and in more detail in Foam Studio’s tutorials on volume modelling and the fields system.

The studio also has a lot of beautiful process imagery on its website, which you can find via the link below.
