Eye candy: Gnomon’s beautiful 2018 student reel

Gnomon – School of Visual Effects, Games and Animation has just uploaded its 2018 showreel, showcasing the best work created by students at the leading international CG school over the past year.

The video provides an eight-minute round-up of some of the world’s best student art: Gnomon was voted animation school of the year at the 2017 Rookies awards, and overall school of the year in 2014 and 2015.

Eight minutes of the world’s best student animation, VFX and CG art
The reel kicks off with animation and VFX shots, many of which wouldn’t look out of place in commercial cinematics: notably Kyle Martin’s 3D reimagining of a scene from 1999 anime Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade.

In several cases, you can catch a glimpse of how the shot was created – one project, Albert Chiang’s ‘Jack meets Mordor’, even featured in our round-up of the 10 best VFX and animation breakdowns of 2018.

The second half of the reel focuses more on CG illustration, environment work and character design, including recent Best of Term award-winner Omar Taher, with a range of turntables and flythroughs.

Again, timelapses and breakdowns show how many of the scenes were created, and in many cases, icons at the foot of the screen show the software packages and games engines used.
