Boris FX ships Mocha VR 5.6

Boris FX has released Mocha VR 5.6, the latest version of its planar tracking software for virtual reality work and 360-degree film-making, adding support for stereoscopic workflows.

The release marks a change of branding: whereas previous releases were attributed to original developer Imagineer Systems, this is the first to be credited to Boris FX, following its buyout of Imagineer in 2014.

A complete toolset for tracking and processing 360-degree footage’
A new edition of the existing Mocha Pro software designed for tracking “problematic” 360-degree footage, Mocha VR was released last year as both a standalone app and plugins for common compositing tools.

Since then, it has been adopted by studios ranging from established VFX firms like Digital Domain to new specialist facilities like Light Sail VR and Felix & Paul, and for The New York Times’ VR content.

Track stereoscopic 360-degree footage without having to process each eye view manually
The 5.6 update takes the “complete stereo toolset” from Mocha Pro and adapts it for VR work, making it possible to track, rotoscope or stabilise stereoscopic footage without having to adjust each eye individually.

Users can now work on a single master view and have corrections “ripple to the other eye view for reduced manual keyframing”.

The software supports “most common 360-degree formats”, including top/bottom and left/right, plus native stereo in host applications that support it, such as Nuke.

Mocha VR’s nadir patching and horizon stabilisation tools for stitching and undistorting 360-degree footage have also been updated for “improved VR headset viewing”.

Pricing and availability
Mocha VR 5.6 is available for After Effects, Premiere Pro, Media Composer, Nuke, Fusion, HitFilm and Vegas Pro running on Windows Vista+, Linux and Mac OS X 10.7+. The update is free to existing users.

New licences cost $995 for a single host platform (Adobe, Avid or OFX tools like Nuke and Fusion), or $1,695 for the standalone application and multi-host plugins, up $200 from the original release.

At time of posting, Boris FX is also giving away the Continuum VR Unit, normally priced at $199, with new purchases of Mocha VR.
