Wacom unveils Cintiq Pro 13 and 16 pen displays

Wacom has announced the Cintiq Pro 13 and 16, two new touch-enabled pen displays that provide a more traditional counterpart to the MobileStudio Pro tablets the company unveiled last month.

Higher resolution, colour gamut and pressure sensitivity than existing Cintiqs
The information currently available about the new Cintiqs is pretty minimal, but they seem to take the key features of the MobileStudio Pros and translate them into a more conventional format.

Whereas the MobileStudio range are effectively complete mobile graphics workstations, the Cintiq product range consists of conventional pen display peripherals.

However, like the MobileStudio Pros, the new models support a much higher screen resolution: 4K, compared to the existing Cintiq 13 HD Touch‘s 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.

Updated 17 November: While Wacom’s website still refers to the displays as supporting “up to 4K” resolution, that now seems to refer to the underlying technology, not the Cintiq Pros themselves.

The Cintiq Pro 13 is listed as having standard full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080px) while the Cintiq Pro 16 is listed variously as having either 2840 x 2160px resolution or Ultra HD (3,840 x 2,160px).

They also support “richer colour” which, if they follow the pattern of the MobileStudio Pros, will mean 96% of the Adobe RGB colour gamut, as opposed to the old 75%.

Updated 17 November: It’s significantly higher, but not quite that high: 89% of Adobe RGB for the Cintiq Pro 13; 94% of Adobe RGB for the Cintiq Pro 16.

Pressure sensitivity has also been quadrupled – the new Wacom Pro Pen 2 supports 8,192 levels of pressure – and, according the the video above, parallax effects have been almost eliminated.

At 13.3″, the screen size of the Cintiq Pro 13 matches that of the Cintiq 13 HD Touch, while the 15.6″ Cintiq Pro 16 fills a gap in the existing product line-up, which currently jumps right up to 22″.

Pricing and availability
Wacom hasn’t announced pricing for the Cintiq Pro 13 and 16, but the existing Cintiq 13 HD Touch costs $999.95, so we’d expect them to be significantly cheaper than the equivalent MobileStudio Pros.

Updated 17 November: Pricing has been confirmed at $999.95 for the Cintiq Pro 13 and $1,499.95 for the Cintiq Pro 16. The Cintiq Pro 13 is due to ship in December; the Cintiq Pro 16 in February.
