Adobe releases Photoshop CC 2017

Adobe has released Photoshop CC 2017, the latest update to its industry-standard image-editing software.

Although the update adds a number of new features to the application, many – like greater integration with Adobe Stock templates and support for SVG image fonts – are targeted at print and web designers.

For CG artists, the more useful changes are likely to be general workflow features, like the redesigned search and Properties panel, and smaller updates like improved selection and masking.

Improved Properties panel and in-app search
General workflow changes in Photoshop CC 2017 include an extended Properties panel that displays the dimension of each layers in pixels, plus more typography options for type layers.

There is also a new in-app search panel that can be launched from an icon in the application frame.

The panel enables users to search for tools, panels, menus, help content and tutorials, but also to search for stock assets from the Adobe Stock online marketplace directly within the software.

Greater integration with Adobe Stock
Increased integration with – or promotion of – of Adobe Stock is key to a number of the changes in CC 2017.

The marketplace now hosts 3D objects and layout templates, the latter of which can be accessed directly from File > New as the basis for new projects.

Photoshop’s Libraries panel also now supports Adobe Stock templates.

The Libraries panel also now has the option to search for similar images from within Photoshop, and to use search results within projects by dragging them directly onto the Canvas.

New Liquify and masking options
Smaller changes include the option to adjust each eye of a portrait photo or drawing independently when using the Face-Aware Liquify feature, as shown above.

There is also an “improved Select and Mask Workspace”: the Polygonal Lasso tool has been added to the task-space toolbar, and you can view high-res or low-res previews during selection.

The application also comes with seven new brushes from illustrator and brush designer Kyle T. Webster.

SVG color font support and integration with Adobe XD
Graphic designers also get support for SVG color fonts, two of which – EmojiOne and Trajan Color Pro – are now provided as standard with the software.

SVG elements can also now be copied to the clipboard to paste into Adobe XD, the company’s work-in-progress application for wireframing apps and websites.

The Match Font option added in Photoshop 2015.5, which identifies fonts within raster images, can also now match fonts against any installed on your system, rather than a subset of them.

Pricing and availability
Photoshop CC 2017 is available now for Windows 7 and above and Mac OS X 10.10 and above.

Photoshop is only available via a subscription to Adobe’s Creative Cloud. New subs cost $9.99/month for Photoshop and Lightroom; Complete subscriptions to all of Adobe’s creative tools start at $49.99/month.

Adobe has also updated Photoshop Sketch, Mix and Fix and Illustrator Draw, its associated Android and iOS apps. You can find more details of their new features via the link below.
