Marmoset unveils Toolbag 4.0

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2020 | Posted by Jim Thacker

Marmoset has unveiled Toolbag 4.0, the next major version of its real-time rendering toolkit, and the first full-point update to the software in almost four years.

The release, which is currently available in closed beta, adds support for hardware-accelerated ray tracing and texture baking on current Nvidia RTX GPUs, and for custom workspaces.

A real-time look development and rendering toolkit, particularly for games assets and portfolio work
Widely used by games artists, but also increasingly in other sectors of the industry, Toolbag provides a real-time look development environment, enabling artists to quickly set up materials and lighting for models.

Users can then either bake texture maps for export to other DCC software or game engines – Toolbag exports directly to Unity and UE4 – or render stills or animation directly.

The software is often used for rendering portfolio material, and exports directly to ArtStation.

Support for RTX-accelerated ray tracing and texture baking, updated UI
At the minute, the only information we have on the new features in Toolbag 4.0 is this brief overview, originally posted in the software’s official Facebook group:

  • RTX-Accelerated Ray Tracing – optimized for non-RTX cards too
  • RTX-Accelerated Baking Tools
  • Texture Projects – Real-Time 3D Material Creation
  • Workspaces with Customizable UI
  • Asset Library – Free Materials, Skies, Brushes, and more…

We’ll add more details if we get them.

Pricing and availability
Toolbag 4.0 is currently in closed beta. You can apply to join the Facebook beta testing group here. Marmoset hasn’t announced a commercial release date yet.

The current stable release, Toolbag 3.08, is available for Windows 7+ and macOS 10.12+. New licences cost $189 for individual artists and $399 for studios.
