The Gnomon Workshop has released Introduction to the UV Toolkit in Autodesk Maya 2018, a comprehensive guide to Maya’s advanced UV tools, recorded by industry veteran Eric Keller.

In the video, Keller explores current production workflows for UV mapping in games and visual effects, using assets supplied by artists at Guerrilla Games, The Mill and Square Enix.

The tutorial, which comprises over six and a half hours of video training, provides a comprehensive guide to the revamped UV Editor introduced in Maya 2018.

Keller demonstrates how to use the tools to create professional-quality UV texture coordinates for both games and VFX, and explores texture co-ordinate editing workflows for ZBrush and UVLayout.

The video covers both organic and hard-surface models, using assets from Guerrilla Games senior creature artist Ben Erdt, The Mill VFX artist Sophie Quagebeur and Square Enix senior technical artist Perry Leijten.

Leijten’s rig for Erdt’s Skaarj model, shown in the video above, can be downloaded free from Gumroad. The rig was created for use in Maya 2015, and is licensed for non-commercial projects.
