Online 3D marketplace TurboSquid has acquired rival sites CGStudio and TF3DM, cementing its position as the world’s largest vendor of stock 3D models.

Both sites were founded and run by Silviu Claponea, who will also be joining TurboSquid as part of the deal, the financial terms for which have not been disclosed.

Popular marketplaces for both free and commercial 3D models
Launched in 2011 under the self-descriptive title thefree3dmodels.com, at which point Claponea was still a pre-university student, TF3DM.com quickly became a popular venue for hobbyists to find free content.

Its success prompted Claponea to found commercial model repository CGStudio in 2014.

At the time of posting, neither site seems to have been significantly affected by the change of ownership: neither TF3DM or CGStudio even announce the deal on their homepages.

The buyout is not the first time that TurboSquid has acquired smaller rivals, having merged with Falling Pixel and Exchange3D in 2011. Both of those sites have since been incorporated into TurboSquid itself.
