Gnomon releases essential guide to game animation

The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating Game Ready Animations for Production, an essential guide to game animation skills in Maya and Unreal Engine recorded by Call of Duty series veteran Bill Buckley.

A essential overview of games animation workflows in Unreal Engine and Maya
In the video, which lasts for just under eight hours, Buckley provides a comprehensive introduction to the animation tools in UE4, and showcases his own techniques for speeding up production.

Using a third-person fighting title as a case study, Buckley begins by using the ART Maya rig provided with the Unreal Editor to create and replace animations within a provided project template.

He then moves to more advanced techniques, creating a three-hit attack using an Animation Montage to set up blend and fail conditions based on user input for each stage of the combo.

The video provides a valuable overview of how animation assets can be best used within a game project, and the skills needed to succeed as a games animator.

Bill Buckley has worked in the games industry for over 10 years, including spells as a senior animator at Neversoft Entertainment – and later, Infinity Ward – and lead animator at Starbreeze Studios.

His resume includes eight Guitar Hero titles, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, and his work has also been featured in commercials, VR experiences, comic books and theme-park attractions.
