Autodesk unveils ReCap Studio and ReCap Photo

Autodesk’s new ReCap product line in action. Announced earlier this week, ReCap Studio and ReCap Photo recreate 3D environments from scan data and on-site photos.

Autodesk has announced ReCap Studio and ReCap Photo, a pair of new tools aimed at recreating 3D environments from laser scan data and on-site photography.

ReCap Studio handles data preparation, enabling users to import, organise and clean data ranging from “non-intelligent, black-and-white sparse point clouds” to 3D models. The software is currently available for free.

ReCap Photo is a cloud-based photogrammetry tool, and will ship on 12 April.

‘Streamlined and scalable’
According to the press blurb: “ReCap is the first industry solution to bring together laser scanning and photogrammetry into one streamlined process.”

“In addition, no other solution on the market provides the … scalability to handle extremely large data sets.”

The ReCap products are really aimed at architects and engineers: as far as we can work out, ReCap Photo will only be available in Autodesk’s Design suites, not the new Entertainment Creation Suite.

Nevertheless, they’re tools that you could imagine uses for in architectural visualisation or set extension work for visual effects.
