Video: Digital Domain’s Real Steel V-Ray tricks


Digital Domain Lead Lighting Artist Blake Sweeney discusses the studio’s Oscar-nominated VFX for Real Steel.

Most people know V-Ray as an industry-standard renderer for the visualisation market. What sometimes gets overlooked is that it is also often used in movie work.

Digital Domain has been using V-Ray on movie projects for a while, notably on Tron: Legacy.

Now V-Ray developer Chaos Group has posted a video interview with Digital Domain lighting lead Blake Sweeney on his work on robotic box-a-thon Real Steel. Obviously, it’s intended as a promo for the software, but there’s some cool tech stuff in there, including the challenges of using the renderer for organic characters.
