Chaos Group has released V-Ray for Softimage as a free open beta before the software’s commercial release.

The new edition supports most key features of Softimage, including ICE compounds and many of the native procedural node types, and is compatible with version 7.0 of the software and above.

V-Ray is already available for most other major professional 3D software packages, including 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D and SketchUp. As one CGTalk user put it when the news was announced, “I think I speak for a lot of people when I say, ‘Hell, yeah – it’s about time.'”

The beta is expected to run for two months and is open to any registered user on the Chaos Group website.
