Contrast Optical to launch HDR video camera

Contrast Optical is to launch a new range of video cameras capable of capturing HDR footage in real-time.

According to the company’s website, the system, which is due to be presented at Siggraph this year, captures and merges three different exposure brackets to generate high dynamic range footage.

At under 5lbs, and the size of a prosumer SLR, the Gen II AMP cameras should provide a lightweight alternative to Spheron’s HDR video system, although it’s too early to say if they will be more affordable for indie VFX artists.

According to the company’s website, the first batch of cameras will be for private clients only, so public interest will determine whether it does a second, larger production run.
