21 years of Prince of Persia

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 | Article by Bob Ward

21 years of Prince of Persia and he is finally old enough to have his own movie.

In light of the new epic movie coming out May 28th starring Jake Gyllenhall as the Prince, I thought it would be nice to look back on the long lineage of what became one of the longer game franchises in video game history.

Some of you know the prince very well from every single game. Others of you may only know about the movie.

I was very excited to hear about Disney making a Prince of Persia movie based on the video game series. They did a great job with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise so I have faith this will be along the same lines of quality. Then again many movies that are based on games take our cherished characters and turn them into something completely different ie. Jill Valentine in Resident Evil the movie. I was stunned to hear that Donnie Darko was going to portray the Persian Prince. However, to my disbelief I saw that from the movie trailer they did turn Donnie into the Prince? It is still amazing to see what movie make-up and Gold’s Gym can do to turn Hollywood stars into anything.

Who is your favorite Prince of Persia? Will it be the one from the 8 bit game that started it all? or will it be the super beefy rockstar prince of Warrior Within? Maybe, just maybe Jake Gyllenhall will be the best prince.

Nevertheless, here are some great shots from all the past games to help catch you up to speed.

I invite you to leave comments of your favorite Prince of Persia and why.

Please don’t disappoint me Jake and the millions of other game fans…no pressure.

Thanks for this visual recap of 21 years of PoP! Of course, the 1989 DOS game that started it all takes the win, haha. The trailer rocks, and I hope the movie will, too. :)

The movie was pretty good for a re-telling of a video game. They stayed pretty close to the original story. I wish there would have been more puzzle solving sequences though. And what’s up with the Prince having a British accent.
