Eye candy: Blizzard posts epic new WoW cinematic

Blizzard Entertainment’s in-house artists reliably turn out some of the best cinematics in the business, and their latest – a 150-second teaser for the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm – is no exception.

The spot sees Azeroth disappearing beneath fire, brimstone and – more unusually for a game cinematic – some very nice, slightly stylised rendered water.

The whole thing is narrated by Deathwing the Destroyer: a dragon with what sounds like a 60-a-day habit. (Perhaps dragons don’t need to smoke to achieve those rich, deep, marinated vowel sounds – or not smoke any more than biologically necessary, at any rate.)

Games sites are excited, with The Escapist noting that the teaser “pretty much blows everything up forever”.

Anyone wanting to know what the actual gameplay in Cataclysm will be like is out of luck, but for now, click that link and let the mighty elements roll over you.
