Chaos Czech ships Corona Renderer 5 for Cinema 4D

Chaos Czech – previously Render Legion, prior to its acquisition by Chaos Group – has released Corona Renderer 5 for Cinema 4D, its latest update to the renderer, adding a new 2.5D displacement system.

The update also optimises a number of the renderer’s existing features, including the new caustics system and proxies, and adds a new Multi Shader and Corona Sky objct.

Primarily a performance release
As with the 3ds Max edition, released at the start of November, Corona Renderer 5 for Cinema 4D is primarily a performance release, having shipped just five months after Corona Renderer 4.

The main change is the new 2.5D displacement system, intended to reduce render time and RAM usage over rendering with true 3D displacement.

The figure put on the performance boost in Chaos Czech’s blog post are lower than for the 3ds Max edition: 16.8% lower RAM usage on a scene with “almost nothing but pure displacement”.

Also as with 3ds Max, the new caustics system introduced in version 4 has been optimised, with a 10.5% reduction in memory usage and 37% in render time on a scene with “almost nothing but caustics”.

Caustics also now respect the include/exclude list for scene lights.

In addition, the proxies system has been updated, adding support for animated objects.

Chaos Czech cites a time saving of “around 70%” to load a scene with 50 cloned instances of an animated proxy and get the first results from a viewport interactive render.

Improvements to memory usage and render times across the board
New features include a Multi Shader, for randomising shaders or shading properties across objects; and a Select Shader and Select Material, for setting up variant shaders for a single object.

The update also replaces the Corona Sky tag with a new Corona Sky object. It supports multiple environments, which can be used in LightMix to adjust the time of day as well as scene lights after rendering.

There are also a number of smaller changes, which you can find via the link below.

Pricing and system requirements
Corona Renderer 5 for Cinema is available for 64-bit Cinema 4D R14+ on Windows 7+ and Mac OS X 10.7+, via a ‘Fair SaaS’ rental model, which costs between €24.99 and €44.99 a month ($28-50).
