VFX supervisor Everett Burrell will be revealing how cult Netflix superhero series The Umbrella Academy was created at an exclusive free event at Gnomon’s Hollywood campus next Thursday, 5 September 2019.
The event, Stylized Super Powers and Apocalypses: The VFX of The Umbrella Academy, will also be broadcast worldwide on Gnomon’s Twitch channel: you can watch it via the player embedded above.
Discover how the VFX for a darkly comic cult sci-fi series were created
Based on the Dark Horse comic series of the same name, The Umbrella Academy traces the story of a dysfunctional family of adopted sibling superheroes.
The Netflix adaptation won praise for its blackly comic take on the superhero genre, and for its Emmy Award-nominated visual effects, created by studios including Weta Digital, Spin VFX, Method Studios and Folks.
In his Gnomon presentation, VFX supervisor Everett Burrell will be revealing how the show’s almost 1,900 visual effects shots were created, from post-apocalyptic environments to super-intelligent CG chimps.
As a teaser for what is in store, both Spin VFX and Weta Digital have breakdowns from the show on their websites, the former showing the environments and the latter showing Pogo, the ill-fated chimp butler.
Free to attend, but register online in advance
Super Powers and Apocalypses: The VFX of The Umbrella Academy takes place at Gnomon from 7.30-10:00pm PDT on Thursday 5 September 2019. Entry is free, but you’ll need to register online.
