Eye candy: Chaos Group’s new V-Ray VFX showreel

Chaos Group has updated its 2018 V-Ray showreel, its annual round-up of the best new visual effects and animation work created with the renderer.

Originally posted last September, it covers both long-form and short-form work, including movie and broadcast effects, and commercials, game cinematics and brand design.

With the movie work, Scanline VFX is responsible for most of the highlights, in the shape of Justice League, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (there’s a breakdown video here) and an amazing sequence from Tomb Raider.

Mackevision dominates the broadcast work: most obviously, through its work on Game of Thrones, but also in its Emmy-nominated effects for Lost in Space.

(Even if you haven’t seen the movie, it’s also worth checking out its beautiful VFX breakdown of German kids’ movie Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver.)

The short-form work is an embarrassment of riches, but our personal highlights include Unit Image’s amazing God of War trailer (breakdown here) and Goodbye Kansas’s cinematics for Overkill’s The Walking Dead.

There is also some great work from commercials specialists a52 and Elastic, and it’s nice to see work from the excellent Polish studios Ars Thanea and Juice. Nothing from Asian studios, though. Maybe next year?
