Eye candy: SideFX’s 2019 Houdini games reel

Just in time for GDC, SideFX has released its 2019 games reel: a three-minute compilation of the best recent games, cinematics and real-time projects created using its software.

In the case of Houdini, that means both pre-rendered projects – like Platige Image’s Metro Exodus trailer, whose destruction sims were created in Houdini 16.5 – and games like arcade title Sega World Drivers Championship, which uses Houdini-created terrain.

However, the demo also shows Houdini Engine in use to integrate Houdini procedural assets – ranging from race tracks to sports stadiums – into game engines, with clips of both raw assets and in-game results.

It also covers a nice range of titles, from FX artist Kristian Kebbe’s one-person project Escape the Breach through indie VR experiences like Magnopus’s Blade Runner 2049: Memory Lab to full-blown AAA releases like BioWare’s Anthem and Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man.
